Baltimore Police Dog Training: Cruelty or Animal Abuse?

November 9th, 2009 | by Sweetie The Papillion

It not easy being a police dog.

Whereas lots of dogs have little more to do than just be cute and maybe roll over a couple times for their dinner, police dogs are constantly thrust into precarious, crucial situations. Obviously, it’s important for the safety of everyone involved, including the dogs, that they areĀ extremely well-trained.

But how much is too much?

That’s the question raised by this video, which shows the training that one dog goes through as a member of the Baltimore police department. Even keeping in mind that police dogs have more stressful lives than civilian dogs, many have expressed shock and outrage at the rough treatment shown in the video.

What do you think? Has the trainer crossed the line here? Let me know with your comments or via Twitter.

(Watch with caution–it is a little difficult to watch)

  1. Baltimore would do well to consult with Steve White, a police K9 trainer with more than 30 years experience, who is on board with much more positive training techniques. He could certainly guide them toward a more humane approach that still gets results.

Is this even a question in anyone’s mind? This is clearly abuse that should result in arrest and charges for that officer and the trainer. These techniques are decades old, outdated, and incorrect. Modern dog training achieves better results humanely. How do police officers not become violent, abusive human beings when they do this?
