Swine Flu is on everybody’s lips. Not literally of course–that would be pretty disgusting!
Everyone from newsrooms to co-workers at the water-coolers are talking a lot about this new strain of influenza, scientifically known as H1N1. There’s been far too much evidence that it can have negative effects on humans.
But what about pets?
Let’s start with the bad news. Those keeping porky pets should still be worried. Swine Flu isn’t just a name, but can and does develop and spread in the porcine population.
The good news, however, is that there appears to be no threat to cats or dogs. And although it has been isolated in a ferret, there is no evidence it can spread from a ferret to a human. This information is according to the ASPCA.
While Swine Flu isn’t a pet issue, many other types of illnesses can befall domesticated animals–Bird Flu that has a fatality rate of near 100% in cats. Be sure to visit a veterinarian if your pet shows any sign of sickness.
