Safe Outdoor Summer Fun With Pooches

July 31st, 2010 | by Sweetie The Papillon

Whether you’re heading to the beach or the trails during the hot summer days, consider your pup’s comfort. Common sense reminds you to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day. Try hiking in the shade instead of the sun’s direct path.

If you’re lounging at the beach or pool, be sure to place your pooch under an umbrella to avoid her getting sunburned.

Summer concerts can be popular dog-friendly venues, though be aware of any pesticides on the lawn. Noisy crowds can stress out any dog, so check in with your dog & evaluate her temperament.

Regardless what your summer activities may be with your dog, please carry plenty of water and a water bowl and allow for many mini-rest stops. If your best friends does overheat, seek the shade, apply cold towels along her body and get to the vet immediately.

This Summer, Protect Your Dog From Heat Exhaustion

Dog Drinking Water from Cup

In New York City earlier this month, a $1 million lawsuit was filed by a wealthy childless couple after their dog Percy died from heat exhaustion. They accused the dog walking company who was in charge of his care at the time of negligence. When Percy was dropped off at his owner’s home, he was reportedly visibly distressed and breathing with great difficulty. Witnesses said the dog was dropped off after riding in a hot van. The dog walking company said everything was fine, but Percy was later found splayed out in front of the air conditioner, dead, lying on his back with his legs straight up.

This summer in New York City with temperatures reaching triple digits some days, it’s more important than ever to ensure your dog doesn’t suffer from heat exhaustion. Remember, dogs don’t sweat. To cool off they must pant, stand in water, and drink lots of water. On hot days, it’s best to leave your dog at home.
