In 1954, the show Lassie began its impressive 19-year television run. Some of the appeal was the eponymous collie’s gleaming coat and amiable demeanor. No doubt the quaint folksiness and bland attractiveness of the human stars played a role. But for my bones, the biggest reason Lassie became a hit was a common dog-owner fantasy: being able to understand what the heck your pooch was trying to communicate.

“Oh, it’s spelled S-E-A-N”
“Arf.”
“Yes, there sure are lots of ways of spelling that name. Lets get you some food, girl.”

Food! Hands! Dog! Really?
