If you’re like Josie – my 2.5 lb papillon sister – dog parks can be a bit overwhelming to say the least. Regardless of your dog’s size or temperament, taking her to the local dog park can be either a fun adventure or lead to traumatic situation. To be sure that all off-leash activity is safe and playful, here is a simple list that will keep all tails wagging when the gate opens:
- Find a fenced dog run that separates large breeds from the little guys. Usually the cut off is 25 – 30 lbs, but I’ve seen a feisty rat terrier chasing an Australian Cattle Dog so think about your dog’s personality before entering.
- Be sure to bring a bowl for water and supply water throughout your dog’s off-leash runs.
- As a dog-owner, hanging out in the dog run isn’t the time to catch your emails and update your twitter accounts. Put your blackberry phone away and stay alert. That means picking up after your dog and be ready to intervene should a fight occur.
- Use common sense! If your dog isn’t feeling well that day don’t bring him into the dog park.
