I re-watched Best In Show this weekend on NetFlix On Demand (note: greatest thing ever!!!). For those of you who aren’t familiar with “Best In Show”–it’s from the people who created This is Spinal Tap, who practically wrote the book on mockumentaries.
There’s a scene in the beginning of the film where Parker Posey and her husband are at a dog psychologist, in regards to when the dog walks in on the couple being “intimate” one night. I’m thinking to myself, dog psychiatrists can’t really exist, can they ?
When I hear the words dog psychiatrist or dog psychologist, I think scam in the same realm as a psychic. I don’t speak to dead people nor do I speak dog (woof*woof*–see I tried) and I don’t think anyone else does either.

Dogs can’t sit on a chair and tell someone how their day was. Dogs can’t tangibly convey much besides a whimper, being violently aggressive, or peeing on the floor.
BUT I WAS WRONG ONCE AGAIN. There are kooks calling themselves dog psychologists and many alternations of that name.
Here’s a list of dog psychologists to let you see through the b______t (hint: the blank is “ullshi”):
- The Pet Shrink – this guy is playing off that he’s legit by joking about his Pet Shrink name, but he’s just as much prying on the ignorance of dog owners as the guys listed below.
- Dog Psychology Help – this guy is basically telling people, “Don’t kill your dogs if they’re misbehaving. Give me money and I will train your dog, but charge you more and call it “psychological consulting”
- Overfield Kennel – This kennel has seminar and classes on dog obedience and dog psychology.
- Canine Behavioural Specialist (note: they’re French): I’ve seen some horrible dog sites, but this might be the worst. Notice the horrible image in the top left???
If I’m missing any of the more ridiculous practitioners of dog psychology, please comment below with a link.
Dogs are animals. Let’s not forget that. If you don’t give your dog the space and freedom to act naturally every now and then to balance out the training, they’re bound to go insane and act against your wishes. It’s not because they’re depressed or need dog xanax.
What would it feel like if you were locked in a cage or kept in an apartment all day–I would go INSANE. Basically, be responsible with your dog because it is a living breathing creature and similar to raising a child–it takes patience, persistence, focus, and rationality. In summation, don’t be fooled into wasting your money on a dog shrink when you would know what the problems were if you were paying attention.
