Some of you have asked how does one find a reputable breeder. Here are a few tips to take into consideration:

• Regardless of what type of breed you have your heart set on, remember that the breeder should give a lifetime guarantee.

• Some breeders even email periodically to check that the puppy is happy in her new home.

• Other breeders will take back the dog should the owner be unable to continue to provide for it.

• Read up on the breed that you are interested in and ask the breeder about the personality, trainability, any potential or know health problems. Most breeders enjoy talking about their breed and are willing to share training and grooming tips.

Things to watch out for when working with a breeder (these are all No-No’s):

    • The breeder is willing to ship the dog to you via plane, without you seeing the puppy in person.
    • The breeder is only interested in making the sale and not taking the time to properly introduce you to the puppy.
    • The breeder shows no interest in you or the home that the puppy will be going to (i.e., the breeder doesn’t ask you how long the puppy will be left alone during the day).
    • If the breeder doesn’t provide AKC registration papers.
    • If the breeder sells their litters to pet stores.

Be sure to do your homework when working with a breeder. After all, you want to have a healthy and happy dog for a very long time, without dreading future consequences.
