What better way to enjoy the summer breeze than to go for a hike with your dog. Before you enter a park’s trail, make certain of the park’s dog rules. Some allow for off-leash hikes and be certain to pick up after your dog. If you are unfamiliar with the park’s trails, pick up a trail map or carry a portable GPS.
Here is a short list of some things that you may want to bring along to make your hike a more enjoyable and safer one:
- water (for you and your pooch), water bowl, treats, food (if canned, make certain to pack a light-weight can opener)
- small first aid kit, poop bags
- tick collar for your dog and insect repellent for you
- pocket knife, sunglasses, hat, and flashlight if you think your hike will be into the evening hours
Remember to take lots of little breaks especially if you’re hiking during the hottest hours of the day, during humid temperatures or steep terrain. There is nothing wrong with sitting by a pond and letting your dog take in nature’s scents.
