With a new year approaching here are a few dog-friendly financial tips to save money in 2010:

  • Some dogs’ coats require more maintenance than others. Daily grooming can be done in the comfort of your home without having to schedule grooming sessions. Give your dog a bath at home or stop by the grooming salon every other month instead of monthly. Some doggie spas offer self-serve dog washes for under $20.
  • Reduce potential cancers by spaying and neutering your dog. Some cities offer low-cost procedures.
  • Schedule annual veterinary appointments. This preventative measure can reduce future health care bills.
  • Brush your dog’s teeth daily will help reduce costly dental cleanings at the vet and reduce the serious risk of periodontal disease.
  • Cancel the daily dog walker once a week and walk your dog instead. A trip to a nearby park can be a great bonding time and both of you get some excerise while saving money.
