I’m going to bring my dog to the in-laws’ for Thanksgiving. How can I make him behave?

November 24th, 2009 | by Colleen

This is actually something I go over in my dog training classes near holiday season each year. Changing your dog’s routine (particularly if he is a young puppy) can cause “regression,” in terms of housetraining, nipping/chewing and basic obedience.

This does not mean you should cancel your holiday plans, but be prepared to be a good puppy/dog manager and take this opportunity to help your dog successfully transition to new environments.

Dogs are not great at generalizing rules from environment to environment. Meaning, just because your dog understands not to potty in your home, does NOT mean your dog understands to “hold it” indoors everywhere. The same holds true for chewing on furniture and other new and novel items.

Why?

Because Dogs are very specific learners.

5 Tips for A Dog-Friendly Household

November 13th, 2009 | by Sweetie The Papillion

Dogs are fantastic, but they don’t mix with everything. It’s generally considered a pretty poor idea to leave your 100 pound boxer alone in a room with your finest china. Or to give your feisty Dalmatian free reign in your pantry. Or to leave a mischievous little terrier alone with the wires that connect your laptop, desktop, air-conditioner, iHome, and printer-scanner-fax.

Those were all (I should hope) fairly intuitive. Here are 5 tips for making your home a dog-friendly environment that you might not have considered:

1.) Don’t Want to Share a Bed? Give a Bed!: Try purchasing or building a special sleeping spot for your sleeping Spot. Not only will it cut down on their attempts to jump up onto your slumbering oasis, it will allow them to have a place they can feel ownership over. A small, raised bed designed just for your pooch can keep him happy – and fur out of your covers. Try going to a supply store to get one!

4 Holiday Hints for Happy Hounds

November 3rd, 2009 | by Sweetie The Papillion

The holidays are a lot of things: fun, family-filled, frenzied, frantic, festive.  They’re all part of what makes the holiday season such an exciting one. It’s important, though, through all the fancy festivities, not to forget your furry friends. Here are a few tips to make sure that the four-legged fare well:

Careful  when cooking: Many foods that are perfectly fine for humans can be dangerous and even deadly for dogs. Onions and chocolate are well-known for being poisonous to canines, but other  common foods contain risk: mushrooms, potatoes, dough (it can expand in the stomach and lead to problems), macadamia nuts, marijuana…A good rule of thumb is not to change your dog’s diet, and warn any guests not to feed your dog scraps.

Your Kids Are NOT Dogs

I can’t help but to notice bad parents as much as bad dog owners these days.  The other day I was walking along the West Side, and have been a little dopey with the recent humidity. I briefly glanced over a family, and for a second I shook my head as I registered what I had just seen.

Don’t Let Your Dog Be an Accessory…

August 7th, 2009 | by Sweetie The Papillion

It’s NOT a watch.  It’s NOT a bracelet.  It’s NOT an inanimate object to display your wealth, status, or success–it’s a living, breathing animal!

It doesn’t go in your purse. I can see the sadness in this dog’s eyes.  It wants to use its legs.

What are people feeding their dogs?

Before I started this site, the only dogs I really noticed were mine and the ones my dogs were sniffing.  However, lately I’ve been noticing everyone else’s and their hygiene is something that BLATANTLY sticks out (literally and figuratively).
