Dog Friendly Maine

If your summer plans take you and your pooch North, consider hiking Acadia National Park in Maine. Leashed dogs are allowed to explore over 100 trail miles – which means pack some water and yummy doggie treats.

For off leash activities, Little Long Pond near Seal Harbor permits dogs to explore off leash & swim in the pond. From September 15th through May 15th, leashed dogs can enjoy the fresh crisp air at Sand Beach.

After miles of hiking, rest your paws at one of these dog-friendly restaurants, where leashed dogs are allowed at outdoor tables:

If you’re like Josie – my 2.5 lb papillon sister – dog parks can be a bit overwhelming to say the least. Regardless of your dog’s size or temperament, taking her to the local dog park can be either a fun adventure or lead to traumatic situation. To be sure that all off-leash activity is safe and playful, here is a simple list that will keep all tails wagging when the gate opens:

  • Find a fenced dog run that separates large breeds from the little guys. Usually the cut off is 25 – 30 lbs, but I’ve seen a feisty rat terrier chasing an Australian Cattle Dog so think about your dog’s personality before entering.

• Lincoln Road – several dog-friendly shops and restaurants that will welcome you and your well-behaved leashed friend. Don’t forget to check out the Farmer’s Market on Sunday’s from 9 am – 6:30 pm where you can pick up organic produce and fruit to make a fantastic meal at home.

This summer when traveling by air, give your dog a quick break before both of you board the plane. Many US airports are making it easier to travel with your dog by providing “pet-relief” areas within airport terminals. These fenced areas have benches for you and fire hydrants with grass for your dog to enjoy. Just don’t forget to clean up after your pooch.

With the warm months here comes longer stays at the dog runs. Here are a few tips to ensure your dog (& you) are safe & happy.

1 – Do not bring your dog if he is not feeling well or not fully vaccinated.

2 – Expect to get dirty and pay attention to your dog as she plays with others. This means put the Blackberry and morning paper away.
